Ready-to-Use Therapeutic Foods (RUTF) valued at N400 million have been given to Katsina State in an effort to fight acute childhood malnutrition there.
It is anticipated that more than 8,000 youngsters who are severely malnourished will benefit from the offering.
This is on top of the 1,400 nutritional supplements that were already purchased and given to malnourished children whose conditions are not yet life-threatening.
The RUTF was acquired jointly by the state government and UNICEF through the Child Nutrition Match Fund, according to information revealed by UNICEF Country Representative Cristian Munduate on Wednesday during the handover ceremony at the Ministry of Agriculture Warehouse in Katsina.
Mundate stressed how these supplements can save the lives of children suffering from severe malnutrition.
The high percentage of child malnutrition in the state was acknowledged by Governor Malam Dikko Umaru Radda. He conveyed his appreciation for UNICEF’s assistance and gave the public confidence in the state government’s resolve to deal with the problem.
Along with other senior UNICEF officials, two UNICEF Campaign Champions well-known Kannywood/Nollywood star Ali Nuhu and Rahama Sadau attended the handover event.
In Essence
Malnutrition remains a major challenge in many parts of Nigeria, particularly in the northern regions, where poverty, food insecurity, and inadequate healthcare services exacerbate the situation.
The provision of RUTF is essential because it offers a highly effective treatment for severe acute malnutrition, which can be life-threatening if not addressed promptly.
The additional 1,400 nutritional supplements for children whose conditions are less severe further demonstrate a comprehensive approach to preventing the escalation of malnutrition cases.
Governor Malam Dikko Umaru Radda’s acknowledgment of the high rates of malnutrition and his commitment to addressing the issue are encouraging signs of political will, which is crucial for the success of such interventions.
His appreciation for UNICEF’s support highlights the importance of partnerships between local governments and international organizations in addressing complex health challenges.
