Kenyan health officials have initiated a recall of a specific batch of children’s cough syrup produced by Johnson & Johnson (J&J). This action comes just one day after neighboring Nigeria issued a recall of the same batch of medication, sold under the brand name Benylin Paediatric.
Potential Health Risk Identified
The concern surrounding the syrup stems from laboratory tests conducted in Nigeria. These tests revealed elevated levels of diethylene glycol, a chemical linked to several tragic incidents of child deaths in recent years. Gambia, Uzbekistan, and Cameroon have all reported fatalities associated with diethylene glycol contamination in oral medications since 2022.
Precautionary Measures Implemented in Kenya
Kenya’s Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) has swiftly taken action to ensure public safety. In a statement released on Thursday, the PPB announced an investigation into the matter. As a precautionary measure, the board has instructed pharmacies and retailers to halt sales of the affected batch and return all remaining stock to their suppliers.
Specific Batch Information
The specific batch subject to the recall was manufactured by J&J in South Africa during May 2021. This batch carries an expiration date of April 2024.
Seeking Clarification
Efforts have been made to reach Kenvue, the current owner of the Benylin brand following a spin-off from J&J in 2023. However, Kenvue has not yet issued an official response regarding the recall.
Authorities Remain Vigilant
Kenyan health authorities are actively working to ensure the safety of children and the public. This recall serves as a reminder for parents and caregivers to be cautious when administering any medication. Always check the expiration date and consult a healthcare professional if you have any concerns about a particular product.
