Korsakoff syndrome starts with a severe deficiency of thiamine, which is due to heavy drinking, malnutrition, or eating disorders. The brain relies heavily on thiamine to function properly, and without it, some parts of the brain start to break down.

With every drop in thiamine levels, the brain cells can’t generate enough energy which eventually causes damage in some brain parts. Over time, this damage becomes more obvious, leading to problems like thinking difficulty, and many more. If the thiamine deficiency is not corrected early on, this brain damage can become permanent, leading to the full development of Korsakoff syndrome. In this article, we’re going to look at the diagnosis and treatment options for Korsakoff syndrome.

How is Korsakoff Syndrome Diagnosed?

This is one of the several health conditions that’s actually tricky to diagnose. That’s because patients might make up stories to fill in the gaps in their memory, without even noticing it.

Usually, the doctor would start off with some tests to see how well the patient thinks, and how well they can learn new things. A blood test will also be done to see if the thiamine level (Vitamin B1) is low.

Since a low level of thiamine is one of the indicators of Korsakoff syndrome, the doctor can use the positive blood test results to make his confirmation and ruling.

How is Korsakoff Treatment Treated?

Thiamine supplements: Usually, the leading cause of this syndrome is because the body lacks the thiamine vitamin, which is strongly needed in brain health and its full functioning. What the doctor would do is to recommend thiamine supplements to boost its level in the body. This supplement will heal the brain, however, it may not completely heal the damage, depending on how bad it has gotten.

Dealing with alcohol: Heaving drinking is also a big cause of Korsakoff syndrome. It’s a no-brainer that you have to cut back on consuming alcohol. It could be a very tough decision though, but making a conscious effort to reduce the quantity of alcohol you consume on a daily basis, can make a change.

Rehabilitation therapy: Rehab therapy is a special exercise and activity that helps you work on your memory and thinking skills. Korsakoff syndrome has the ability to damage the thalamus (the brain’s relay station for information) and the mamillary bodies (memory processing), if not treated earlier on. This rehab therapy will teach you ways to manage your memory problems and also improve how your brain works.

Support: The memory issues and changes that come with Korsakoff syndrome can be pretty scary. You may feel down, stressed, and anxious, which are normal responses to a situation like this. Having your family, or friends around you can help you deal with these feelings better.

Conclusion

Korsakoff syndrome is a serious brain disorder that happens when your body doesn’t get enough thiamine, often because of long-term drinking, poor nutrition, or eating disorders. This lack of thiamine causes damage to parts of the brain that control memory.

If it’s not treated early, the damage can become permanent. It can be tricky for doctors to diagnose because people with the syndrome might make up stories without realizing it. But through the help of treatment options like taking thiamine supplements, cutting back on alcohol, and doing rehab therapy to help with memory problems, can help you feel better.
