Nigerian YouTuber and filmmaker Korty EO recently went to Twitter to call out a clash she had with the team of leading Afrobeats singer Davido. The favorite of Nigerians and foreigners alike, known for a rather eccentric way of interviewing celebrities on her YouTube show, Korty has built a reputation for bringing a fresh and very authentic perspective into the Nigerian entertainment scene. But that seemed to have struck a raw nerve, as Korty then took to social media to complain about the frustrations she encountered trying to post an interview featuring Afrobeats star Davido.
In her tweets, Korty claimed that she reached out to the team at Davido’s office for permission to re-edit and publish online an interview she conducted with the star. While initially, they agreed to that, later they backtracked and told her not to share the re-edited video. Furious Korty tweeted: “They agreed I should re-edit this video and now have said I must not post the video for reasons I still don’t understand. I am not scared of anyone, but I am wise enough to stay out of battles I’m not equipped for”.
The divided online reactions came thick and fast: some in sympathy with Korty’s plight, whom many saw as a young creative caught up in the celebrity PR and image management machinery; others opined she should have respected Davido’s team’s final decision. A few observers even insinuated this was a strategic PR move, hinting at the idea that such controversies could mean more attention for her channel and her work.
