Rescuers had on Wednesday, 15 March intensified efforts to reach survivors in Malawi’s battered city of Blantyre after Cyclone Freddy had struck southern Africa for a second time leading to floods and landslides that have seen over 200 people killed.
After the cyclone storm hit, weather conditions had been expected to improve as the storm dissipated over land after days of heavy downpours, but flood levels have remained high in some areas stalling emergency efforts.
Meanwhile, the Malawian government had announced that at least 190 people had perished with 584 injured and 37 persons still missing. Authorities in neighboring Mozambique had additionally reported 21 deaths and 24 injured persons.
