Organized Labour had on Wednesday pulled out of the current minimum wage negotiations with the Federal Government.

This development is coming after the FG and the Organized Private Sector, OPS, made an offer of N48,000 and N54,000 as the new minimum wage respectively.

According to the organized labour the offer was a “ridiculous” one.
Meanwhile it’s been gathered that while the FG did not provide any data to support its proposal. The Organised Labour and OPS had on the other hand, said none of its members pays less than N78,000.

The spokesman of the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, Benson Upah has confirmed the Labour’s exit.

What They’re Saying:

Benson Upah, the NLC had said “Yes we are out. We are about to address the press and you will get the details then”.

What This Means:

The withdrawal of Organized Labour from minimum wage negotiations with the Federal Government signifies a significant impasse in efforts to reach a fair and equitable wage agreement.

As it stands, the Organized Labour has decided to stop talks with the government about raising the minimum wage and it is yet unclear how they’ll resolve it. They are of the opinion that the offers made by the government and private sector are too low.
