Former Nigerian capital and commercial hub Nigeria commercial hub, Lagos has made a policy stating that the state would be allowing for safe abortion. The Ministry of Health has disclosed that the policy would be a guidebook for healthcare providers to enable them to perform safe and legally safe termination of pregnancy within the laws of the state.
The health ministry additionally came up with a 40-page policy document that has been titled Lagos State Guidelines on Safe Termination of Pregnancy for Legal Indications to limit the number of deaths attributed to abortion.
Dr. Olusegun Ogboye, the Permanent Secretary in the State’s Ministry of Health, in a statement said that the policy was made to ensure that women and girls in the state had safe abortion services to terminate a pregnancy caused by rape or incest was available within legal jurisdiction and the women and girls had the proper support to go through with the process.
Dr. Ogboye has also added that the document contained information for health workers in the public and private sectors who had the skills and training to properly and safely terminate pregnancies to reduce abortion-related deaths. The Lagos State law allows females to terminate pregnancies therapeutically.
