The leader of Venezuela’s National Electoral Council (CNE), Pedro Calzadilla, announced his resignation on Thursday, along with seven other council members, in anticipation of the upcoming presidential election in 2024.
The lawmakers are likely to establish a committee responsible for overseeing the selection of candidates for the council.
Nicolas Maduro, the country’s president, currently under investigation by the International Criminal Court for alleged crimes against humanity, wields control over all branches of power in Venezuela, including the Electoral Commission.
