LOSCLille pulled a big surprise on matchday two of the UEFA Champions League as it defeated 15-time champions Real Madrid 1-0 to take its eighth win in nine European home games.
Real Madrid opened with a 3-1 win against Stuttgart and started on the front foot. Jude Bellingham engineered the first chance early, presenting Vinícius Júnior, but the shot was refused by Lille goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier. Then Lille pressed in return, with Jonathan David forcing Andriy Lunin to make a brilliant double stop.
Throughout the half, Lille continued to threaten; Benjamin André’s miscued cross clipping the crossbar. Finally, in the dying seconds of the half, Real’s luck ran out when Eduardo Camavinga handled in the box, and up stepped David, cool as ice, to slot home from the penalty spot, sending Lunin the wrong way.
Despite the second-half arrival of Kylian Mbappé, Real Madrid never broke down Lille’s stubborn backline. Closest they came to seeing the net ripple was when Antonio Rüdiger turned Arda Güler’s header goalwards, only for Tiago Santos to hook the ball clear off the line.
Lille survived a late scare when Luka Modrić’s shot was tipped over by Chevalier to ensure a historic win over Real Madrid in their first-ever encounter.
