Manchester United buried the ghosts of their dismal Anfield past to snatch a gutsy 2-2 draw with Premier League leaders Liverpool, extending the hosts’ winless streak at their old enemy’s home to nine league matches.
Each side had chances early on, with Amad Diallo unable to convert a free header for United and Luis Díaz and Alexis Mac Allister going close for Liverpool. Rasmus Højlund had the best opportunity of the first half but his effort was smothered by Alisson.
United took the lead early in the second half when Lisandro Martínez intercepted a loose pass and hammered a brilliant shot beyond Alisson. But Liverpool quickly hit back as Cody Gakpo cut inside to fire into the far corner. A Matthijs de Ligt handball enabled Mohamed Salah to score from the penalty spot, a spot kick that he made, despite an André Onana finger, seem deceptively easy.
Then came Alejandro Garnacho’s introduction, and his cross found Diallo to let rip the equaliser. Both teams pushed for a winner but the game finished as an exhilarating stalemate that left Liverpool’s lead at the top intact.
