A vehicle plowed into jubilant Liverpool FC fans during Monday’s Premier League victory parade, sending 27 people to hospitals across Merseyside. Two victims, including one child, remain in serious condition after the collision that occurred near the city center during the Spring Bank Holiday celebrations. Merseyside Police confirmed the arrest of a 53-year-old local man but stressed the incident wasn’t terrorism-related.

Eyewitness videos circulating on social media showed bodies being thrown into the air as the car accelerated through the crowd. Four victims trapped beneath the vehicle required extraction by emergency crews, while twenty others received on-scene medical treatment before 27 were transported to nearby hospitals. The collision occurred approximately ten minutes after Liverpool FC’s open-top trophy bus had passed through the area.

Authorities Move to Ease Terrorism Speculation

Temporary Deputy Chief Constable Jenny Sims emphasized the “isolated” nature of the incident after angry supporters attacked the suspect’s vehicle before police intervention. The rapid release of the driver’s description aimed to counter potential misinformation, a tactic informed by lessons from last year’s Southport riots. Former Met Police chief Dal Babu noted this preemptive communication strategy helped prevent social media-fueled unrest.

The incident marred what should have been a triumphant day for Liverpool FC, marking their first Premier League title celebration with fans after pandemic restrictions prevented public gatherings during their 2020 victory. City council leader Liam Robinson lamented how the collision “cast a very dark shadow” over the festivities, which drew hundreds of thousands to the city center.

Reuters journalists had observed significant overcrowding and confusion regarding parade routes prior to the incident, with limited signage about street closures. Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the scenes as “appalling” while receiving ongoing briefings about the situation. Liverpool FC released a statement expressing solidarity with victims and confirming direct coordination with law enforcement.

Investigation Continues

As forensic teams examine the collision site, authorities continue questioning the detained suspect while reviewing CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts. Meanwhile, medical officials have confirm four children were among those hospitalized, with emergency services remaining on high alert across Merseyside.
