Jeremie Frimpong, the Dutch right-back, is close to agreeing on a five-year contract at Liverpool as the release clause of €35m-€40m (£29.4m-£33.6m) has expedited the process.
Frimpong is a fast, attacking force on the right with energy in full-flow. From the City academy, he really established himself in the Celtic ranks before joining Leverkusen. With a free transfer in store for Trent Alexander-Arnold from Anfield, possibly with Real Madrid as the next destination, Liverpool are scurrying to land a replacement.
Florian Plettenberg of Sky Germany says the Reds are “seriously pursuing” Frimpong. Fabrizio Romano reports the player is interested, and kicker have gone further and say a full agreement might already be in place.
Leverkusen are open to selling Frimpong, with Alonso on his way out and Ten Hag likely to come in. Ten Hag’s preference for a four-man defence conflicts with Frimpong’s wing-back style.
New head coach at Anfield, Arne Slot, also favors a back four but can provide Frimpong with something akin to Alexander Arnold’s hybrid role in midfield.
