Walker leaves after a decorated period at City, where he made 319 appearances and won six Premier League titles under Pep Guardiola. His most recent outing was in a 4-1 league win against West Ham United on January 4. The spell came to an end when he was omitted from the squad for City’s 8-0 FA Cup mauling of Salford City, with Guardiola saying Walker himself had expressed the wish to “explore options to play abroad.”
Walker, who joined City from Tottenham in 2017, departs during a difficult time for the reigning champions. City are fifth in the Premier League, 12 points adrift of leaders Liverpool, and facing the prospect of being knocked out of the Champions League after losing 4-2 at home to Paris Saint-Germain.
Walker has 93 caps for England, eight of which came on the way to being included in the Euro 2024 Team of the Tournament for playing every minute in England’s runner-up campaign.
His exit comes on the back of a busy January transfer window for City, who have also brought in Egypt forward Omar Marmoush, Brazilian defender Vitor Reis and Uzbekistan’s Abdukodir Khusanov.
