Manchester United announced the departure of Mason Greenwood, signaling the end of his tenure with the club after a criminal investigation concerning possible attempted rape was officially closed by prosecutors six months ago.
The 21-year-old English forward has not graced the field for United since January 2022, leaving his future hanging in the balance during the club’s internal inquiry.
In an official statement, the club declared, “All those involved, including Mason, recognize the difficulties with him recommencing his career at Manchester United.”
Consequently, the club announced that it has been mutually agreed that the most appropriate course of action is for him to continue his career away from Old Trafford, and they will collaborate with Mason to facilitate this transition.
Greenwood himself expressed his support for this decision, stating, “the best decision for us all … to continue my football career away from Old Trafford, where my presence will not be a distraction for the club.”
The allegations against Greenwood pertained to controlling and coercive behavior and assault in connection with a young woman, after images and videos were circulated online.
Prosecutors in England formally closed their case in February, but United continued its internal investigation.
