Manchester United are changing their wage structure to no longer to overpay stars to up their performance as they have done so with Bruno Fernandes as they have gradually raised his salary.
Not that they are shy about wages, United have the third-lowest wage-to-revenue ratio the Premier League at 55% but that is on account of more players underperforming for high quotas, think about Casemiro and Jadon Sancho. It is since turned to a method current players can be incentivised to earn rewards based on their performances as opposed to their names, emulating Fernandes’ contract path.
Fernandes joined from Sporting CP in 2020 and earned £100,000-a-week, modest compared to the Red Devils’ leading earners. His regular displays earned him a £250,000-per-week deal in 2022, which rose to over £300,000 in 2024. The club hopes to adopt this model with their other young stars.
Amad Diallo’s contract was tripled to £100,000 per week following his successful transition into the first team, while January signing Patrick Dorgu earns £40,000 a week, with performance-related increases.
But it has made contract negotiations with Kobbie Mainoo more difficult, with the midfielder said to be looking for £200,000 a week. Chelsea are keeping an eye on his situation. Alejandro Garnacho’s new deal is also likely to be contentious as he blossoms and moves beyond earlier terms.
United’s new pay structure rewards merit, altering transfer tactics.
