Manchester United continued with their dismal performance in Europe as they again gave away the lead to remain on level terms for a third successive UEL match this time leaving Istanbul with a 1-1 draw against Fenerbahçe at the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium. This result leaves United with just one win from their last 11 European outings.
A wonderful Christian Eriksen strike in the 15th minute, set up by the slick move involving Manuel Ugarte and Alejandro Garnacho, gave United the lead. United were unable to hold on to the lead. Marcus Rashford was close to doubling, while Fenerbahçe, managed by former United boss José Mourinho, responded strongly. And then André Onana produced a brilliant double save from Youssef En-Nesyri but moments after the restart, the striker scored the equaliser as he headed home from Allan Saint-Maximin’s cross.
Tensions boiled over when Mourinho was sent off for protesting a denied penalty appeal, and despite a late chance for Diogo Dalot, United couldn’t find a winner. Garnacho remained United’s most dangerous player, but the match fizzled out after Antony was stretchered off to force a lengthy delay.
The draw extends United’s UEL frustrations while Fenerbahçe protected an unbeaten record in the competition.
