A devastating wildfire, intensified by powerful winds, has prompted authorities to order villagers to evacuate their homes southeast of Athens.
The blaze, dangerously close to buildings in Kouvaras village, located approximately 27 km (17 miles) from the Greek capital, poses a significant threat to nearby settlements, according to the civil protection service.
In a race against the inferno, around 150 firefighters, supported by 40 fire engines and 11 aircraft, are battling to bring the flames under control, despite the challenging gale-force winds.
This alarming incident comes as the Greek meteorological service has issued a high fire danger warning, coinciding with the country’s recovery from its initial major heatwave of the summer.
