Meta Platforms, Inc., the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, said today that it will keep its rule stopping new political ads going on longer than planned. This rule was supposed to end on November 6, after the US Election Day.
According to Meta, this change is to stop any mix-ups or wrong information from spreading after people have voted. The company started this rule in 2020 to fight against false information during important times around an election.
“Meta is dedicated to keeping the voting process fair and stopping wrong information from spreading,” a Meta spokesperson said. “We think this change is needed to make sure our platforms stay a reliable source of information for voters.”
This rule affects all new political ads on Facebook and Instagram, including ads about social issues, politics, or elections. Ads that were already running before October 29, passed an ad check, and were seen by at least one person will keep running, but they can’t be changed much.
