Michael‍‌‍‍‌ Carrick has signed an agreement to take over the position of interim manager at Manchester United, reports say. United parting ways with Ruben Amorim this month was one of the factors leading to this decision on Carrick’s part initially.

Instead of locating a permanent replacer right away, the club went for an interim measure, and Carrick was the choice after the club weighed Ole Gunnar Solskjær and Ruud van Nistelrooy as fellow ex-players’ options. After the talks with all three were held, the club decided to finalize the deal with Carrick, and the announcement is about to come.

The Athletic says that the talks were going without a hitch and that the discussions about the backroom staff were also included in the talks. Former England assistant Steve Holland is to serve as the assistant manager, while Jonathan Woodgate, who has been Carrick at Middlesbrough, will also be on the coaching side. Jonny Evans will work together with the Under-21 director, Travis Binnion, who is already coordinating the senior side.

Reports indicate that the final discussions will be over very soon, including the naming of the final staff. They are moving together quickly so as not to miss a detail in the time of the derby between Man City and Man United on Saturday, which will also be the first game in charge for Carrick. That gives him at least a few days of training ground time with his teams before the game.

Wayne Rooney, a former captain of the Red Devils, has also recently put out the idea of returning to Old Trafford under Carrick’s management and said that the club needs people who really know the club’s culture and identity. Everton’s coach believes that by making this appointment, the club is making a step towards bringing back the “family” atmosphere that was a trademark of Manchester United for a long ‍‌‍‍‌time.
