On Thursday, February 29, 100 people reportedly seeking humanitarian aid in Gaza were killed. The Palestinian authorities have said that Israeli forces had fired upon the crowd, while Israel said that the deceased people were crushed.
The United Nations secretary-general, Antonio Guterres has on the other hand, said that the deaths would require an effective independent investigation.
Speaking in St. Vincent and the Grenadines ahead of a regional summit, Mr Guterres remarked that he was “surprised” by this newest episode in the war with Israel.
He was also queried about the failure of a recent Security Council resolution that was seeking a ceasefire for the two nations.
Mr Guterres had replied, saying that worsening geopolitical divides have “changed the veto power into an effective instrument of paralysis of the action of the Security Council”.
He was quoted to have said:
“I am completely convinced that we need a humanitarian truce and we also need the unconditional and immediate release of hostages.” He ended his statement by expressing hopes that the Security Council would be able to achieve those objectives.
