Officers of a joint task force codenamed Operation Hadarin-Daji have liberated six female students from the Federal University of Gusau. The students had been kidnapped in the early hours of Friday, September 22.
Captain Ibrahim Yahaya, the Information Officer of the task force had confirmed this development to the News Agency of Nigeria–NAN, via a telephone call on the same day.
The rescue operation had been in response to the alleged kidnapping of an uncertain number of female students from their rented hostels at Sabon-Gida, a few distances away from the main university campus, situated on the outskirts of the Zamfara State capital.
Yahaya had also said that the troops had pursued the abductors of the students into the forest and engaged them in a gun battle, aided by the air component of the Nigerian Air Force.
He had further remarked that several bandits had been nullified during the rescue effort, which was still ongoing as at the time this report was made.
The troops had additionally, recovered one AK-47, a magazine, four motorcycles, and one communication gadget from the bandits.
Back in June, students of the institution had staged a protest to draw attention to the spate of abductions, aimed at their fellow students living in Sabon-Gida and Damba communities respectively .
