Minister of State for Defence Bello Mohammed Matawalle has criticized the Northern Elders Forum (NEF) for opposing the current administration, describing the group as a political burden to northerners and unrepresentative of the region.
Matawalle took issue with threats issued by the NEF against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, calling them “reprehensible and naive.” He argued that it is preposterous for a group seeking political relevance to disrupt the system and create political disunity among Nigerians.
He characterized the NEF as a political paperweight embarking on a destructive path that could bring disrepute to the North for the group’s personal and selfish gains.
“The NEF is more of a political burden to Northerners, seeking to erode other people’s rights to gain recognition and relevance despite the failure of their sponsored candidates in the 2023 general elections,” Matawalle said.
While many have overlooked the NEF’s statements, Matawalle emphasized the need to address the group’s overbearing attitude on issues affecting political unity and cohesion. He stated that the group cannot offer any positive ideas about the future of Northern Nigeria, or the unity and togetherness of the country.
Matawalle concluded by asserting that the NEF lacks the authority to challenge Tinubu’s victory in 2027.
