Months after the passing of beloved Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, known by his stage name Mohbad, a shroud of uncertainty still hangs over the cause of his death. A recent autopsy conducted on his remains has yielded inconclusive results, leaving fans and family frustrated.
A Crucial Delay?
Professor Sunday Soyemi, a forensic scientist and pathologist at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), delivered the perplexing news to the coroner. The autopsy, he explained, failed to pinpoint a definitive cause of death. One critical factor contributing to this, according to Prof. Soyemi, was the extended timeframe – a staggering 21 days – between Mohbad’s passing and the autopsy itself. This delay, he suggested, led to significant decomposition of the body, hindering a more thorough examination.
Was Time the Only Culprit?
Mohbad’s family lawyer, Senior Advocate Wahab Shittu, took the issue a step further. He revealed that the pathologist emphasized the importance of a swift exhumation – ideally within 12 hours of burial – to prevent decomposition. This raises a critical question: why was there such a significant delay in conducting the autopsy? Was it a procedural oversight, or were there other factors at play?
“The Pathologist said the body ought to have been exhumed within 12 hours after it was buried to avoid decomposition. So the summary he is saying is that the cause of death cannot be ascertained and when you say the cause of death cannot be ascertained, it means it is suspicious, it is not clear, no particular reason.”
A Tangled Web of Suspicion
Mr. Shittu’s statement further muddied the waters. He hinted at the possibility that medications administered to Mohbad before his death might have contributed, though a definitive link could not be established. This opens yet another can of worms. Were these medications necessary? Were they properly prescribed and administered?
The lack of clear answers only fuels speculation and suspicion.
Shittu said, “He also went further to say that it may be attributed to reactions to certain drugs administered on him before he died. Again he then qualified that to say he does not know whether it is those drugs that actually led to his death”.
Family Discord: A Hinderance?
The path to uncovering the truth appears riddled with obstacle alluded to internal discord within Mohbad’s family, which even led to the withdrawal of a previous lawyer, Femi Falana. This public airing of family disputes raises concerns about whether these issues might be hindering a cohesive investigation.
A Nation Divided: Where’s the Accountability?
The Mohbad case tragically highlights a larger issue in Nigeria. Social media commentary suggests this isn’t an isolated incident. Where are the safeguards to ensure timely and thorough investigations into high-profile deaths? Where are the laws protecting the rights of creatives, as promised by the National Assembly? These are crucial questions that deserve answers.
A Call for Transparency and Justice
Mohbad’s legacy deserves more than an unanswered question mark. The public deserves transparency. His family deserves closure. The upcoming cross-examination of Prof. Soyemi on June 11th offers a glimmer of hope. Hopefully, it will shed some light on the murky details surrounding Mohbad’s death. This is not just about one musician; it’s about accountability, a functioning justice system, and ensuring such tragedies don’t become shrouded in perpetual mystery.
