Jose Mourinho has hit back at Pep Guardiola’s recent comments regarding their Premier League title counts, defending the fairness of his own successes. Guardiola, after Manchester City’s 2-0 loss at Liverpool, held up six fingers to indicate his six league titles, mocking the chants of “You’re getting sacked in the morning” from the Anfield crowd. The gesture referenced Guardiola’s superiority over Mourinho, who has won three Premier League trophies, all with Chelsea.
Mourinho, now at Fenerbahce, hit back ahead of his team’s clash with Besiktas, suggesting that Guardiola’s triumph could be tainted by the ongoing legal issues surrounding City’s alleged financial violations between 2009 and 2018. “I won fairly and cleanly,” said Mourinho. “If I lost, I would congratulate my opponent because they were better. I don’t want to win through dealing with 150 court cases.
Mourinho has already indicated that he will seek a fourth Premier League winners’ medal from the 2017-18 season if City are stripped of their titles after Manchester United finished as runners-up to Guardiola’s team. City, in fourth position in the Premier League, travel to Crystal Palace this weekend.
