John Ugbe, MultiChoice Nigeria’s CEO, has reiterated the impossibility of providing equal screen time to all housemates on the popular reality show, Big Brother Naija. In an interview with Pulse Nigeria, Ugbe emphasized that equal screen time distribution is impractical in the entertainment industry.
This statement comes in response to ongoing criticism from former housemates and fans, who claim that some participants receive more screen time, leading to biased audience perceptions.
As the show gears up for its ninth season, set to run from July 28 to October 6, 2024, Ugbe’s comments highlight the inherent challenges in reality TV production. Ebuka Obi-Uchendu will return as the main host, with Toke Makinwa hosting the weekly recap show, Big Brother Naija Buzz, on Showmax.
“It’s like a movie and you want equal time for every actor in the movie. I think as much as possible the cameras tend to follow a lot of activity. So if you’re sleeping and some people are awake, we’re not just going to put the camera on somebody sleeping for one hour because we want to equalise,” he said.
John Ugbe emphasized that Big Brother Naija focuses on housemates being their authentic selves, noting that those who genuinely express their personalities often achieve significant success.
He explained that the show’s primary goal is to deliver maximum entertainment to viewers, and this ties into the selection criteria for housemates. Ugbe pointed out that authenticity is key, and those who stay true to themselves tend to fare well on the show.
