At least 24 residents of Bida Local Government Area in Niger State have been hospitalized following an outbreak of a mysterious illness at the headquarters.
Discharge and Treatment Update
Reports indicate that 20 of the affected individuals have been discharged after more than a week of treatment at the Federal Medical Centre and Umaru Sanda Ndayako General Hospital, Bida. Currently, three patients remain under medical care—two at FMC Bida and one at Umaru Sanda Ndayako General Hospital.
Symptoms and Community Concern
The Mysterious illness is marked by sudden collapse, loss of communication abilities, and weakness, leaving many residents concerned. However, no fatalities have been reported during the outbreak.
Investigation and Diagnosis
The Niger State Commissioner for Secondary and Tertiary Health, Dr. Bello Tukur, attributed the illness to untreated severe typhoid and malaria. He explained that the Disease Surveillance Unit of the Public Health Department first received information about the outbreak on January 19, 2025.
A State Rapid Response Team (RRT), led by the Assistant State Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer, conducted investigations on January 20, alongside the local government health team.
“Symptoms observed in patients included sudden onset of weakness, loss or altered consciousness, with or without fever,” Dr. Tukur said.
Blood samples from the affected individuals revealed that the illness stemmed from poorly treated malaria and typhoid fever. Dr. Tukur also mentioned hypersomnolence due to diphenhydramine as a possible contributing factor.
Response and Preventive Measures
The commissioner confirmed that all patients were treated locally within Bida. To prevent further outbreaks, the Niger State Government and Bida Local Government Area authorities have sensitized residents on environmental hygiene, personal hygiene, and adequate nutrition.
Additionally, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has been notified, and further laboratory investigations are underway. Active case searches in health facilities and the community aim to manage the situation effectively.
Bottom Line
The recent outbreak highlights the critical need for prompt diagnosis and treatment of illnesses like malaria and typhoid fever, as well as the importance of public health awareness campaigns. Local and state authorities remain vigilant to prevent future occurrences.
