News has broken about the kidnapping of the Chairman of the Keffi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, Hon. Muhammad Baba Shehu and his driver were spirited away in the Gudi district of Akwanga local government around 6:30 pm on Friday. According to reports, Hon Shehu was on his way to Lafia when the gunmen struck. In the resulting shoot-out, a police orderly attached to the Chairman’s office, Alhassan Habibu Nasir met his untimely end.
It was stated that earlier that day, the Honourable Shehu had attended an annual gathering of the Old Boys Association of his alma mater, Government College, Keffi, and announced after making a speech that he would leaving at once for Lafia. It was as the Chairman’s vehicle approached Gudi that the gunmen opened fire on the car, killing Nasir, the police orderly, and abducting both the chairman and the driver. The police orderly was later revealed to have been a 400-level student of Sociology at the Nasarawa State University at the time of his death.
The Commission of Police for the State, Mr. Adesma Soyemi confirmed the incident to reporters and added that the police had stormed the location to prevent further attacks and capture the kidnappers. He gave firm assurances that the kidnapped men would so be found and rescued and the perpetrators brought to justice.
