On Saturday at around 3:10 PM, Nigeria’s national electricity grid experienced a system failure, resulting in a nationwide blackout. This incident marks the fourth grid collapse this year, causing significant disruptions in power supply across various states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Impact on Electricity Distribution Companies
Kaduna Electric
Kaduna Electric, which serves Kaduna, Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara states, issued a statement acknowledging the power outage: “We regret to inform you that the power outage being experienced in our franchise states is due to System Collapse of the National Grid. The collapse occurred at about 3:10 PM, resulting in the loss of supply on all our outgoing feeders. The power supply shall be restored as soon as the National Grid is powered back. Our sincere apologies for any inconvenience.”
Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC)
The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, responsible for power supply in the FCT, Niger, Kogi, and Nasarawa states, also cited the national grid collapse as the cause of the outage: “Please be informed that the power outage being experienced is due to a system failure from the national grid at 3:10 PM today, affecting the power supply to our franchise areas.”
Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company
In a related development, the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company Plc, serving Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Kwara, and parts of Ekiti states, attributed the power outage to a fire outbreak at the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).
Enugu Electricity Distribution Plc
The Enugu Electricity Distribution Plc confirmed a general system collapse affecting the five states of the South-East geopolitical zone: “This has resulted in the loss of supply currently being experienced across the network. Due to this development, all our interface TCN stations are out of supply, and we are unable to provide services to our customers in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo States.”
Jos Electricity Distribution Company
Similarly, the Jos Electricity Distribution Company, which serves Plateau, Bauchi, Benue, and Gombe states, confirmed the collapse of the national grid.
Bottom Line
The repeated failures of Nigeria’s national grid underscore the fragility of the country’s power infrastructure. The latest collapse has left millions without electricity, impacting homes, businesses, and critical services. Immediate measures are needed to restore power, and long-term solutions must be implemented to prevent future occurrences and ensure a stable and reliable electricity supply for all regions.
