Unsurprisingly, Nigeria has once more been plunged into a nationwide power outage after the power grid collapsed earlier Monday morning.
So far into 2024, this is the sixth time the country has experienced such a collapse m.
The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC), which revealed the collapse of the national grid in a statement on Monday morning, had announced that the system collapse occurred at 2:41 a.m. on Monday morning.
The statement titled: “Notice Of Total System Collapse,” signed by EEDC’s Head of Corporate Communications, Emeka Ezeh, had appealed to its Customers in the five states of South-East for understanding, while waiting for the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) to bring back power supply.
The statement had partly read: “The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC) wishes to inform her esteemed customers of a complete system collapse which occurred at 2:41am today, on 15th April, 2024.
“This resulted in the loss of supply to all our interface TCN stations. Consequently, we were unable to provide service to our customers in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo States.
“However, the situation is gradually being resolved as we received supply at Awada TCN station, Onitsha, at 7:30am.
“We are in constant communication with the relevant authorities awaiting full restoration of supply by the National Control Centre, NCC, Oshogbo.”
This repeated failure of Nigeria’s national power grid is very disgraceful and is a stark reflection of the systemic issue that needs urgent attention and resolution.
The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company’s appeal for understanding from customers is understandable, but it’s frustrating for citizens to continuously endure power outages without a clear solution in sight and with the knowledge that another grid collapse is foreseeable in the future.
