NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte had a meeting with President-elect Donald Trump at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, on Saturday, according to NATO spokesperson Farah Dakhlallah.
The meeting discussed “various global security concerns that affect the Alliance,” Dakhlallah mentioned, as Trump gets ready to start his second term in office.
Trump, who pushed for higher NATO defence spending during his first term, is likely to ask member countries to increase their contributions again. He has previously complained about countries he believes are not paying their “fair share” and recently said he “would encourage” Russia to act freely against those countries.
Rutte, who served as Dutch prime minister during Trump’s first term, said he was eager to visit Mar-a-Lago soon after Trump won the November 5 presidential election against Kamala Harris.
