Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have intercepted a significant consignment of 175,000 bottles of codeine-based syrup imported from India. This follows closely on the heels of a similar seizure just a week prior at the Port Harcourt Ports complex in Onne, Rivers State.
Why It Matters
The recent seizures highlight the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in Nigeria. Codeine-based syrups are often misused for their addictive properties, posing a significant public health risk. By intercepting these shipments, the NDLEA is actively working to prevent the distribution of potentially harmful substances within the country.
What They Are Saying
NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, provided details in a statement on Sunday. He explained that the two recent seizures were the result of prior intelligence, which led the agency to request a 100 percent examination of the shipments. Babafemi noted, “The latest seizure of 875 cartons of codeine containing 175,000 bottles and weighing 26,250kg was made on Friday, June 7, 2024, during a joint examination by NDLEA, Customs Service, and other security agencies. The container marked HASU 4787890 from India was enroute to C to C bonded terminal in Enugu.”
In another operation, NDLEA officers from the Directorate of Operations and General Investigation (DOGI) intercepted five parcels of illicit drugs concealed in ladies’ clothes and synthetic hair, destined for the United States and the United Kingdom on June 5.
Bottom Line
The NDLEA’s recent actions underscore their commitment to combating drug trafficking. Through coordinated efforts and intelligence-driven operations, the agency continues to intercept significant quantities of illicit substances, thereby contributing to the broader goal of ensuring public safety and health in Nigeria.
