The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has issued a warning to the public about a fraudulent website that fraudulently claims to offer foreign visa sponsorship while utilising the NELFUND name and logo.
Mr Nasir Ayitogo, Head of Public Relations, made the announcement in a statement to journalists in Abuja on Tuesday.
According to Ayitogo, the website being pushed on Facebook is known to users as labari.com.ng
He replied that NELFUND was not affiliated with such a website or any similar scheme.
“NELFUND’s main objective is to grant educational loans to qualified Nigerian students to advance their academic endeavours in Nigeria.
NELFUND does not offer visa sponsorships or related services, and any claims to the contrary are entirely false and misleading.
He also stated that the bogus website was using NELFUND’s name and emblem without permission to deceive the public, and the fund strongly recommended everyone to exercise caution and avoid communicating with the site or supplying any personal information.
Ayitogo stated that NELFUND was taking urgent action to rectify the situation, having submitted the incident to the appropriate authorities for further inquiry.
What they’re saying
“We ask the public to only rely on information given by NELFUND’s official channels, which include the website www.nelf.gov.ng and verified social media accounts.
“Any communication from NELFUND will be through these channels, and the public are encouraged to verify any suspicious information directly with us.”
Bottom Line
The advice to rely solely on information from NELFUND’s official channels is sound. It reinforces the importance of verifying information through trusted sources, especially when dealing with financial or personal data.
The public should be cautious about unsolicited offers and always cross-check with official websites and verified social media accounts.
