Newcastle United booked their place in the EFL Cup final, defeating Arsenal 2-0 at St. James’ Park and win 4-0 on aggregate. The Magpies, a victory away from their first major domestic trophy since 1955.
VAR did deny Alexander Isak a goal for offside early in the first half. Newcastle kept pushing forward and their efforts paid off when Jacob Murphy found himself in the right place to convert Isak’s shot that struck the post.
And it was Newcastle who looked more likely to threaten as their stout defensive approach seemed to frustrate Arsenal until the unmarked Leandro Trossard saw an effort saved just before the break. And in the second half, a poor pass from the Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya was intercepted and, from there, a goal by Anthony Gordon sealed the victory for Newcastle.
Newcastle will now face the winner of the other semi-final between Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur in the final. For Arsenal, the loss is another layer of woe as they have not won the EFL Cup since the 1992/93 season. Newcastle supporters are looking forward to their chance to lift silverware for the first time in 68 years domestically in the final.
