Why It Matters?

This year’s World Press Freedom Day served as a reminder of the vital role journalists play in informing the public, holding power to account, and safeguarding the nation’s democracy.

The call for a free and independent press resonated throughout Nigeria, emphasizing the need for continued collaboration between journalists and the government to ensure a thriving democracy and a healthy planet.

What They Are Saying

Minister Malagi emphasized the fundamental nature of press freedom, calling it essential for a nation’s progress. This sentiment was echoed by Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo, who praised the media for its sacrifices in holding the government accountable and informing the public. He recognized the press as a cornerstone of a healthy democracy, acknowledging the risks journalists take to bring the truth to light.

“On this World Press Freedom Day, I honour the bravery of the men and women who have dedicated their lives to the pursuit of truth and transparency and promoting understanding in the democratic space.

“I also recognise the challenges they are confronted with in today’s world, from censorship and disinformation to violence and intimidation.

“As Governor, I reaffirm my commitment to protecting press freedom and promoting a culture of transparency and accountability in our state. Let us stand together in defence of freedom of the press and the courageous journalists who bring us the truth undiluted”, Governor Ododo emphasised,” he said.

Governor Ododo further emphasized the need to protect journalists from intimidation and harm, underscoring their critical role in defending truth and confronting negative narratives. He urged the public to stand united with journalists in safeguarding press freedom, a vital element for a thriving democracy.

Similarly, Gombe State Governor and Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, commended journalists for their dedication to democratic ideals and public service. He acknowledged the challenges posed by the digital age, urging responsible journalism in the face of evolving threats like fake news and misinformation. Governor Yahaya reaffirmed his commitment to working with the media as partners in promoting transparency and accountability within his state.

Bottom Line

This collective message from government officials signifies a strong stance in support of a free press in Nigeria. As the nation grapples with environmental concerns and the complexities of the digital age, a free and responsible press remains crucial for holding power accountable, informing the public, and ensuring a robust democracy.
