The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially launched the TELA Maize Variety, a cutting-edge Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) seed designed to significantly boost maize production.
Unveiled at a prestigious launch event in Abuja, the TELA Maize Variety represents a culmination of innovative research and collaboration between the Institute of Agricultural Research (IAR) at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and the African Agriculture Technology Foundation (AATF), with substantial funding from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and other esteemed partners.
Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to prioritizing the welfare, health, and security of its citizens through initiatives that ensure a stable food supply.
This groundbreaking development positions Nigeria as the second African nation to approve GMO maize for commercial planting, following its official approval in February 2024.
The move comes on the heels of a high-level discussion between Bill Gates and President Bola Tinubu in Riyadh, where the adoption of GMO seeds was championed as a vital strategy to enhance agricultural productivity.
With the introduction of TELA Maize, Nigeria is poised to achieve a significant increase in maize yield, thereby bolstering food security and economic stability for the nation. This pioneering achievement is a testament to the power of global partnerships and Nigeria’s unwavering dedication to agricultural innovation and excellence.”
