Nigeria wins gold, silver, and bronze at the commonwealth games

In the women’s discus throw final at the Commonwealth Games taking place in Birmingham, Nigeria won gold and bronze. 

Chioma Onyekwere of Nigeria won the gold medal with a throw of 61.70 meters, defeating Jade Lally of England for the silver medal with a throw of 58.42 meters. 

Obiageri Amaechi of Nigeria finished third in the competition and won the bronze medal with a throw of 56.99 meters. 

A silver medal has also been earned by Nigerian weightlifter Taiwo Liadi, 19, at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. 

In the women’s 76kg weightlifting competition, Liadi came in second place to Canada’s Maya Laylor, who broke the previous Commonwealth Games record with a lift of 128kg.

Adijat Olarinoye and Rafiatu Lawal, two weightlifters, took home gold in the women’s 55kg and 59kg divisions, respectively.

Olarinoye broke the previous record with a lift of 203 kg (92 kg in snatch and 111 kg in clean and jerk), while Lawal won the women’s 59 kg weightlifting event and also broke the previous record with a lift of 206 kg (110 kg in snatch and 116 kg in clean and jerk). 

Since the beginning of the games, Nigeria, which is now ranked tenth in the medals standings, has earned three gold medals, one silver medal, and four bronze medals making a total of eight medals.
