Nigeria’s cocoa output is predicted to rise by 10% this year, influenced by high global prices and good weather, according to the AFEX 2024 wet season report.
The report attributes this growth to higher cocoa prices, caused by greater international demand and supply issues in major cocoa-producing countries. Recent cocoa seedling projects are also starting to show results, improving the outlook for harvests.
“Cocoa production is expected to improve this season after several years of decline,” the report says. “Good weather in the southwestern region, Nigeria’s main cocoa area, has been very important.”
The report also provides important figures, such as an estimated yield of about 320,000 metric tons in 2024. Most cocoa farmers are smallholders with less than 2 hectares of land, and the majority are between 36 and 45 years old.
