Controversial social media personality Idris Okuneye, better known as Bobrisky, appeared in a Lagos court today facing charges of abusing the Nigerian Naira currency. This comes just days after a public spat with another online personality, VDM.

Bobrisky pleaded guilty to four counts brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). These charges stemmed from accusations of spraying and mishandling Naira notes in a way deemed disrespectful to the national currency.

The judge, Justice Abimbola Awogboro, ordered Bobrisky to remain in EFCC custody until sentencing, scheduled for April 9th, 2024.

Reduced Charges and a Guilty Plea

The initial charges against Bobrisky included six counts, with the latter two related to alleged money laundering. However, in a surprising turn of events, the EFCC prosecutor requested these charges be dropped, citing an agreement with the defendant.

Bobrisky then entered a guilty plea to the remaining four counts, each pertaining to Naira abuse.

Potential Penalties and Public Reaction

The Nigerian Central Bank Act (CBN Act) of 2007 outlines penalties for those who tamper with the Naira. Conviction can result in imprisonment for at least six months, a fine of N50,000 (roughly $120 USD), or both.

News of Bobrisky’s arrest and upcoming sentencing has sparked mixed reactions on social media. Some users expressed outrage at the alleged disrespect toward the national currency, while others offered support for the flamboyant personality.

A Wait-and-See Approach

As of now, it remains unclear what sentence Bobrisky will receive. Nigerians eagerly await the court’s decision on April 9th, with many online expressing their curiosity with the phrase Who’s sat please? Me I dey watch am????
