The Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) has made an emergency fundraising of N2.5 billion for the purpose of alleviating the hunger crisis and improving the nutritional levels of Nigerians. This is an 18 month food security programme assistance project by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies which focuses on improving livelihoods, health, nutrition and hygiene (WASH) in severely affected regions.
As stated by the NRCS, an estimate of over 31.5 million Nigerians will experience food insecurity from January to October 2024, which will be made worse by conflict, inflation and other economic factors. The cost of staple commodities is expected to reach three times by the end of October 2024 and also the global burden of severe acute malnutrition in children has increased by 70% as of September 2023.
In response to this crisis, the NRCS will organize its first Annual FundRaising Gala Night in Lagos, which is themed ‘Keeping Humanity Alive’, to raise funds for combating the hunger crisis as well as the WASH programs in the country.
According to NRCS President Prince Oluyemisi Adeaga, “We are bringing together leaders and influencers to make a real difference. Money collected via the ticketing stands will go straight into fighting hunger and improving water and sanitation for the needy.”
