Well-known cinematographer, Buari Olalekan Oluwasegun, otherwise known by his Unlimited L.A, has remarked that the fusion of foreign cultures and nudity in Nigerian music videos was solely to appeal to music consumers.
According to Oluwasegun, some artists would sometimes ask video directors to project a particular culture or nudity in their music videos according to their target audiences.
Speaking in a recent interview with Channels Television,
Unlimited L. A had said during an interview with Channels TV, “On the topic of foreign cultures and nudity in Nigerian music videos, I think Nigerians are the most traveled people. I read about it somewhere.
“What we do as music video directors is to obey the instructions from the artists. Certain artists may say they want their fans in the U.S., Europe, or even Africa to relate to a particular music video concept. So the consumer is a principle factor to consider.
Sometimes, music video directors mash up everything [the different cultures] together and just throw it out there.”
He then said that even though some foreign cultures may seem as though it is ‘eroding our cultural respect, decency’, they are mostly incorporated into Nigerian music videos to appeal to the audience.
On a brighter note, Unlimited L.A admitted that the Nigerian cinematography industry has made tremendous progress, observing that several years ago, most Nigerian music videos were shot outside the country but it was rare to see Afrobeats music videos are filmed in Nigeria.
