Prof Mahmood Yakubu, the INEC Chairman had on Friday, December 17 said that the 2023 general elections were under threat owing to the numerous attacks on its facilities across the country in recent times.
Yakubu had made the warning during a public hearing by the House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee investigating attacks on INEC offices and facilities across Nigeria.
Yakubu, while addressing the committee, said that regardless of the attacks, the Electoral Commission was determined to continue with the preparations for the elections, warning, however, that the implications would be far reaching if not curbed.
“We are determined that we would continue with our preparations for the 2023 general election. All the facilities would be rebuilt, materials will be replaced and alternatives will be found. However, should such attacks continue at the pace at which they are currently happening at the moment, the Commission may find it increasingly difficult to recover in time for the election.”
