In 2021, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) mandated all mobile network operators to link phone numbers to National Identification Numbers (NINs), a move aimed at enhancing security and identity verification.
Additionally, the NCC extended this requirement to link NINs to bank accounts, warning that non-compliance could result in the suspension of accounts.
Ahead of the launch of the mobile platform, the Director-General of the Commission, Engr. Abisoye Coker-Odusote, highlighted the upcoming self-help platform, which allows Nigerians to register for NINs from the comfort of their homes, eliminating the need to visit NIMC offices or agents.

However, NIN registration has been marred by errors and incorrect data, causing difficulties for affected individuals. Previously, those seeking to correct their NIN data faced challenges and long waits at NIMC offices nationwide.
To address these issues, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has introduced a mobile application enabling Nigerians to modify their NIN data. With this app, users can rectify errors in their name, date of birth, and phone numbers associated with their NIN profile, offering a more convenient and accessible means of updating personal information.
How to modify your NIN data using the NIMC mobile app:
Log on to
- selfservicemodification.nimc.gov.ng
- Click on Register if you don’t have an account
- Click on login if you already have an account
- After login, you will be requested to provide your NIN, last name and email address
- After providing the above, the data modification channel will be accessible
