Leading a McLaren onetwo ahead of teammate Oscar Piastri in a dramatic and highstakes race, Lando Norris raced to victory at the Austrian Grand Prix. Norris fought Piastri in an early wheeltowheel fight starting at pole and held firm under pressure to claim his third victory of the season.
After eleven races, McLaren comes out the team to be beat, reducing Piastri’s lead in the drivers’ championship to 15 points. On lap 11, Piastri briefly took the lead, but Norris quickly responded, with both racers pushing the limits in a tight battle. On lap 20, Piastri almost repeated their Canadian GP crash with a locked-brake dive, but both escaped undamaged.
Lewis Hamilton and George Russell finished top five for Mercedes while Charles Leclerc came in third for Ferrari. After first-lap contact with Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen had his first DNF of the year.
Liam Lawson recorded a career-best sixth, and Sauber saluted a double points finish by means of novices Gabriel Bortoleto and Nico Hulkenberg. Tenth was Esteban Ocon’s last point.
As the championship fight intensifies, McLaren now top the constructors’ standings by 207 points.
