North Korean Troops Face Heavy Losses in Russia-Ukraine War, White House Says

North Korean forces are enduring staggering casualties on the front lines of Russia’s war against Ukraine, with over 1,000 soldiers killed or wounded in just the last week in Russia’s Kursk region, White House spokesperson John Kirby revealed on Friday.

This shocking figure dwarfs previous estimates shared by U.S. officials, underscoring the severity of the situation.

“It is clear that Russian and North Korean military leaders are treating these troops as expendable, ordering them into hopeless assaults against Ukrainian defenses,” Kirby stated. He described the attacks as “massed, dismounted assaults” – brutal, ground-level offensives aimed at overwhelming Ukrainian positions.

Silent Fronts: No Response From North Korea or Russia

North Korea’s mission to the United Nations has remained silent, failing to respond to requests for comment. Meanwhile, Russia’s U.N. mission also declined to provide any remarks.

U.S. and Ukraine Condemn the Escalation

President Joe Biden is expected to approve another security assistance package for Ukraine in the coming days. Biden recently condemned Russia’s Christmas Day attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and urban centers, emphasizing his administration’s commitment to bolstering Ukraine’s defense.

Earlier this week, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy disclosed that over 3,000 North Korean soldiers have been killed or wounded in the Kursk region, citing preliminary data.

Who Are the Casualties?

The casualties span ranks, from lower-level troops to senior figures “very near to the top,” according to a U.S. military official who spoke anonymously. On Dec. 17, the same official noted that North Korea had already suffered hundreds of losses in earlier clashes.

The Bigger Picture

The involvement of North Korean forces highlights the increasingly desperate measures Russia is taking to sustain its war efforts. Their significant losses not only expose the cost of these alliances but also raise questions about the motivations and implications of North Korea’s deepening entanglement in the conflict.

As the fighting rages on, both Ukraine and its allies remain resolute in countering these intensified assaults. But the staggering toll on North Korean soldiers – many of whom may have little choice in their deployment – adds another layer of tragedy to an already devastating war.
