Nuhu Ribadu Responds to Niger Junta’s Claims

In a stirring response to recent claims by Niger Republic’s junta leader, General Abdourahamane Tiani, Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, has delivered a message blending reassurance with a call for action. Tiani’s allegations, which mentioned specific locations within Nigeria, have raised questions and sparked conversations about regional security dynamics.

Speaking with BBC Hausa, Ribadu urged journalists and locals in the identified areas to investigate the claims. “For Allah’s sake, verify these allegations thoroughly. Let’s separate fact from fiction,” he said, signaling Nigeria’s commitment to transparency and truth in addressing such sensitive issues.

Reassurance Amid Uncertainty

Ribadu’s message wasn’t just about addressing the allegations—it was a pledge of protection and partnership.

“We want to assure the people of Niger that Nigeria will never allow harm to come their way,” he said, striking a tone of solidarity.

Highlighting Nigeria’s resilience in tackling terrorism, banditry, and insurgency, Ribadu pointed to the nation’s hard-earned victories as evidence of its ability to navigate complex challenges.

“By God’s grace, we have overcome formidable threats before, and we will continue to do so.”

A Call for Unity

Beyond reassurance, Ribadu extended an olive branch to Niger, emphasizing the need for collaboration. “Terrorism is a common enemy that does not respect borders,” he said. “We must unite as one family to fight this threat together. What affects one of us inevitably affects us all.”

He called on Niger to rejoin the regional joint task force, which includes Nigeria and Chad, noting that the withdrawal had weakened collective efforts to combat threats like Boko Haram. “Together, we are stronger. Cooperation is the key to securing our shared future.”

A Subtle Warning About External Influences

Ribadu also gently cautioned Niger about the risks of aligning with external powers. “While forming new alliances might seem appealing, history has shown that foreign interests don’t always align with ours,” he said. He shared a poignant reminder from the past when Niger regretted allowing foreign military bases.

“Nigeria has always been your family, your ally,” Ribadu added. “Let’s focus on regional partnerships that prioritize our shared history and mutual interests.”

Moving Forward Together

Ribadu’s remarks reflect Nigeria’s commitment to fostering a spirit of partnership and understanding with Niger. While acknowledging the complexities of the current situation, his message offers a hopeful vision for a united approach to shared challenges. The emphasis on collaboration, transparency, and mutual respect underscores Nigeria’s role as a cornerstone of stability in the region.
