The global financial markets experienced a significant rally on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, as Nvidia’s stock price rebounded from a recent slump, gaining 6.76% and sparking a broader market rally. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite indices snapped a three-day losing streak, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped almost 300 points due to declines in Boeing, Goldman Sachs, and Home Depot.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury note remained unchanged ahead of key inflation data scheduled for release on Friday. U.S. oil prices fell 1% as investors monitored Middle East tensions and summer demand for gasoline. In a significant development, Volkswagen announced plans to invest up to $5 billion in electric vehicle startup Rivian, which had been under pressure due to losses and cash burn.

The investment comes as Rivian prepares to launch updated models, and it marks the second legacy automaker to invest in the startup after Ford. The news sent Rivian’s shares soaring 50% in after-hours trading. Meanwhile, 16 Nobel Prize-winning economists signed a joint letter warning of economic risks if former President Donald Trump were to serve a second term, including the potential to “reignite” inflation.

Federal Reserve Governor Michelle Bowman also expressed her willingness to increase interest rates if inflation fails to decline or worsens. The comments align with the prevailing sentiment among Fed policymakers seeking stronger confirmation of inflation’s decline. In Asia, Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 fell after inflation rose faster than expected, increasing the likelihood of an interest rate hike.

Elsewhere, chip-related stocks advanced after Nvidia rallied on Wall Street, with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp, Advantest, and MediaTek all rising. Japan’s export-heavy Nikkei 225 gained 1.46%, and the broad-based Topix added 0.44%. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index was little changed, and mainland China’s CSI 300 was down 0.25%.

According to Jefferies, the global data center market is poised to surge due to the adoption of AI-powered GPUs, driving a meteoric rise in demand for data center space. The investment bank identified several stocks that stand to benefit from this trend. Overall, the markets are navigating a complex landscape of inflation concerns, geopolitical tensions, and technological innovation, making for a volatile and dynamic trading environment.
