New York City has launched a $4 million pilot program featuring self-contained, automated public restrooms equipped with a strict 10-minute time limit. Unveiled by Mayor Zohran Mamdani, the initiative deploys 17 high-tech units across all five boroughs. Aimed at improving public access while curbing loitering, the design automatically opens the facility door once time expires, accompanied by a firm public reminder: “This is not a place to scroll.”
Automated Features and Access Methods
Operated by technology provider Throne Labs, the touchless, ADA-accessible units do not require conventional connections to city water, sewer, or power lines. They feature flushing toilets, running water, climate control, and baby-changing stations.
Users receive an audio alert at five minutes and a second warning at eight minutes. At 10 minutes, flashing lights and audio cues announce that the door will open, with a built-in grace period opening the lock at roughly 10 minutes and 30 seconds. Open daily from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM, the free units are accessible via QR code, text message, tap card, or the Throne Bathroom Network app. The accompanying smartphone app allows residents and tourists to check availability, monitor real-time cleanliness status, and locate the nearest unit.

Strategic Citywide Distribution
The 17 units are distributed across high-foot-traffic neighborhoods in all five boroughs:
Manhattan: Cooper Square, Malcolm X Plaza, Delancey/Suffolk Streets, Plaza Alianza Dominicana.
Queens: 31st St & Astoria Blvd, 31st St & Northern Blvd, 54th St & Northern Blvd, 64th St & 34th Ave.
The Bronx: Yankee Stadium, Admiral Farragut Playground, Mapes Park, Monsignor Raul Del Valle Square.
Brooklyn: Columbus Park, Milestone Park, Fulton St & Truxton St, Avenue C Plaza.
Staten Island: North Shore Esplanade.
