The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, has announced that, effective March 2025, all Corps Members will receive a new monthly allowance of ₦77,000.

The development comes six months after the Federal Government pledged to increase the stipend from ₦33,000 to ₦77,000. The approval for the increment was contained in a letter from the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission, dated September 25, 2024, and signed by its Chairman, Mr. Ekpo Nta. The adjustment follows the enactment of the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024.

Federal Government Reaffirms Commitment to Corps Members’ Welfare

In a statement issued by the NYSC’s Acting Director of Information and Public Relations, Caroline Embu, the Director-General assured Corps Members that their well-being remains a priority for both the Scheme and the Federal Government. He made this statement during an interactive session with Corps Members at the Wuse and Garki NYSC Zonal Offices in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

General Nafiu commended the Corps Members for their dedication to national service and urged them to remain calm, focused, and disciplined. He emphasized that the NYSC was established to promote national unity and cultural integration, urging all stakeholders to support its mission.

Timely Payment Assured

General Nafiu assured Corps Members that the Scheme has a solid record-keeping system to ensure timely disbursement of funds.

“With effect from March, you are going to receive the sum of Seventy-Seven Thousand Naira as your monthly allowance. NYSC is good at record keeping, and I can assure you that your money will be paid. The Nation and the Scheme appreciate you,” he stated.

Implications of the Allowance Increase

The increment aligns with the government’s broader efforts to improve the welfare of young Nigerians participating in the NYSC program. It is expected to boost morale among Corps Members and ease their financial burden, especially in the face of rising living costs.

Corps members across the country will be looking forward to the implementation of the new allowance set to take effect in March 2025, as the NYSC continues to play a critical role in fostering national unity and youth development.
