In a rather comical twist, the Governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has voiced his desire for a fair and inclusive process in selecting his successor for the upcoming 2024 Governorship election. This proclamation comes from a man who recently orchestrated a somewhat eyebrow-raising victory for the PDP in all 18 local government areas of Edo State during the local government election.
During a chat with reporters on a fine Friday, the governor made it clear that he won’t be the one to “handpick” or “bless” his successor. He stressed that what matters most to him is that the succession process should be characterized by fairness, equity, and a feeling of togetherness, all in the name of keeping Edo united.
With a hint of humor, he added, “That’s the only potential hiccup I see, but it won’t deter us. Our main goal, as an administration, is to finish strong and deliver on the promises we made to the good people of Edo during our campaign.”
Addressing the ongoing speculation about his relationship with the State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, Governor Obaseki clarified, “I have no personal grudges against the Deputy Governor. It’s all quite straightforward.”
Now, as the Independent National Electoral Commission has declared that the Edo governorship election will take place on September 21, 2024, some might find it amusing that a governor who once locked horns with his own deputy is now championing the cause of a free and impartial election. But hey, stranger things have happened in politics!
