Liyomo Okoi, an officer in the Nigerian Police Force, was fired for using a machete to beat a guy. On July 31, 2022, a viral video showing the fired officer flogging a man with a machete went viral. According to a statement released on Monday by the Force’s public relations officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the officer was fired for serious misbehavior. The Force has terminated Force No. 524503 PC Liyomo Okoi, who was assigned to the Cross Rivers Police Command’s Ekori Divisional Headquarters, for severe misconduct that was shown in a go-viral video on July 31, 2022, in which he was seen beating a guy with a machete. His dismissal is effective on August 8th, 2022.
Usman Alkali Baba, the inspector general of police, also voiced his deep disgust at the allegations of extortion and brutality made against some police officers via public complaint channels, notably social media platforms. The IGP has, therefore, asked all supervising Commissioners of Police and Tactical/Strategic Commanders to ensure rigorous supervision of their troops as subsequent occurrences of a similar sort would be viewed strictly,” the statement said. The Intelligence Response Team, the Special Tactical Squad, and the Special Weapon and Tactics Units have all undergone a comprehensive overhaul at the IGP’s request to ensure that their operations are in line with the reason they were formed and that they are operating at their peak efficiency and productivity following the IGP’s administration’s mandate and public safety.
The Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Intelligence Bureau (AIG-FIB) has been instructed by the IGP to supervise the three units to ensure that their operations are professional, active, and productive and do not violate the citizens’ and other members of the public’s fundamental rights.
